So tired
Aw, hell. I've been sneezing a lot lately, and then today I came down with these weird alternating hot and cold spells. I don't know that I'm running an actual fever, but it sucks either way. It's probably allergies. But still--I am determined to not go into the month of October without finishing the annotated Fifteen Minutes thing because I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON IT LONG ENOUGH NOW, GOD. I have got to move on with life at some point.

(That's frustration with myself talking there, by the way.)

("Are you feeling guilty? YEAH YOU ARE!")

By the way, I'm recording another--different--podcast on Saturday, which should be fun. General subject: vampires in the media. Doing speaky-speaky stuff like this seems to help my confidence, so I'm going with it. Someday, I may actually bring myself to be sociable in real life, my God!

I really think the Keira and Orlando and Saturday Night Fever thing is kind of a joke. Someone wrote it as a joke and people bought into thinking it was serious. I mean, everything about it sounds ridiculous. Perhaps it's part of a study of how viral things are on the Internet, and how the worse/crappiest/most inane stories spread farther and faster? Somewhere, there is an informative, well-thought-out, and fact-based article on the Civil Rights movement that is dying in cyberspace.

Hee, yeah. I truly do not believe that story can be real, or have originated with someone who was being sincere in the telling.

NO MORE SPIDER-MAN MOVIES UNTIL, OH, THEY CAN REVAMP IT COMPLETELY. I like to pretend that there are none after the second one, and it was excellent. (weren't they saying that they were going to cast Patrick Fugit in the next one? Couldn't they have stuck with that? I might've reassessed my thoughts after that.)

I can't wait for Quantum of Solace. I get a bad case of the squees whenever I see the movie poster.

robinmc From: [info]robinmc Date: September 18th, 2008 02:09 am (UTC) (Link)
This is the second time I've heard about Keira Knightley doing a remake of "My Fair Lady." I had hoped it was just an evil internet joke.

Rex Harrison is probably rolling in his grave.
sabra_n From: [info]sabra_n Date: September 18th, 2008 03:04 am (UTC) (Link)
That's the really annoying bit- if they want a big star for the box office, they can cast a really famous, charismatic guy who can't sing in the Higgins role. With Eliza you need to have someone who can sing. Soprano. Which Keira Knightley has never shown any sign of being capable of, let alone being anything like Julie Andrews or Marni Nixon.
robinmc From: [info]robinmc Date: September 18th, 2008 03:22 am (UTC) (Link)
With Eliza you need to have someone who can sing.

As soon as I read that, my thoughts for some reason immediately went to Emmy Rossum, and I flashed back to seeing her in "Phantom of the Opera."

Suddenly, Keira Knightley didn't seem so bad.
sabra_n From: [info]sabra_n Date: September 18th, 2008 03:32 am (UTC) (Link)
Nooo, someone new! And talented! A star is born and all that! Cast famous classy actors as Higgins and Pickering and Mrs. Higgins, get true singing actors for Eliza and Freddy. (If they cut "On the Street Where You Live" I will be SO SAD.)
robinmc From: [info]robinmc Date: September 18th, 2008 03:39 am (UTC) (Link)
Oh, I agree, casting new/talented people would be the way to go.

But honestly, I wish they'd just leave it alone. When has remaking a movie ever turned out well?
sabra_n From: [info]sabra_n Date: September 18th, 2008 04:17 am (UTC) (Link)
When has remaking a movie ever turned out well?

The Magnificent Seven? And I admit I kind of liked the Freaky Friday remake, too. *is ashamed* And didn't Hitchcock remake his own The Man Who Knew Too Much? I have no idea which version is better, though. Ocean's Eleven was a remake, too, and it was quite decent.

That said, no, there's no reason for a remake of My Fair Lady, but I've sort of resigned myself to it. At least it's going to be a movie musical with excellent source material, unlike certain others I can name from the recent crop.
robinmc From: [info]robinmc Date: September 18th, 2008 05:04 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ok, you have me on Freaky Friday and Ocean's 11. But those remakes changed so much from the original movies, that I would call them more of a "re-imagining" than remakes.

I guess I was thinking of Gus Van Sant's ill-advised, shot-for-shot remake of Psycho.

I know they won't do a carbon copy of the original MFL, but how much can they re-imagine it without destroying it?

P.S. When did they remake The Magnificent Seven?
sabra_n From: [info]sabra_n Date: September 18th, 2008 05:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
The Magnificent Seven was a...it's probably fairer to say reimagining of Seven Samurai.
robinmc From: [info]robinmc Date: September 18th, 2008 08:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ah, yeah, I knew that, I thought you meant that they had remade the American version.

So I IMDB-ed it, and lo, they did, about ten years ago...as a TV show.

Oy.

Once upon a time I had a tape (of the cassette variety) of Jeremy Irons and Kiri Te Kanawa doing My Fair Lady, with much of the dialogue on it too, as I recall. I picked it up at a second hand store. Oh, here it is (Dear God, what is she wearing?). It is quite entertaining and Jeremy Irons can carry an approximate tune, which is a bonus with Higgins. So, that's exactly the kind of casting you need, like you said. Some young thing with an amazing (soprano, not pop) voice and some uppercrust British person who can speak the hell out of Higgins.

Can Knightley do a cockey accent? I think I've only ever heard her use her own more poshish accent. Which isn't even as important as her ability to sing. Unless they got someone for her to lip-synch too, but I think that's considered taboo these days.

Srsly? I mean...AF was entertaining. But...Hitchhiker's is so massive! I'm not sure it can ever be done. Also, he's basically asking for nasty mail and reviews. People like me will hate anything he comes up with. No matter how awesome it actually is. We're just annoyingly devoted like that.

I think the real problem with Dane Cook is that he's doing comedies. Most people know him as a comedian, so when they see him in comedies there's this expectation (subconscious or not) that it'll be like watching one of his comedy specials. When it's not, people don't like the movie. They want to see "Dane Cook" funny, not whatever brand of comedy the movie has.

Then again, I've never seen his movies, and I don't even like his brand of comedy. (He yells and shrieks too much. It's like he has to act outrageous to be funny, which seems to be the case to me. A drunken frat boy! That is what I was aiming for. He has a few jokes I've laughed at, but not many.)

Well, it says on the page that they're locking parts of the site down to delete archives or whatever, and they're reopening on the 1st October. It's a little unclear whether or not the actual novel-writing starts then, or whether it starts in November. I'm kinda hoping October rather November because the earlier in the school year, the less revision will get in the way!
