I keep thinking a "pannibal" ought to have something to do with bread
msauvage purple
To begin, Miss Freddie has posted her interview with director/producer David Slade (pictured here with her business card. Nor is he the only one...). She was, in fact, my date to the Pannibal last night, in the sense that we sat on Skype all night on the other side of the country and laughed our asses off. ppyajunebug was actually there, liveblogging under her "pannibal" tag on Tumblr with a number of pictures and short video clips on Vine, because she is awesome. Herewith, various things I collected over the course of the evening:

Video: "Hannibal" Season 2 Preview - Comic-Con 2013 - TV Line.

@DireRavenstag: I have spotted someone in a costume representation of myself! Go forth, minion! BRING ME THE BLOOD OF OUR ENEMIES. #SDCC #ComicCon

@DireRavenstag: BTW our enemies are handsy Thranduil cosplayers and Emmy voters. Also anyone who has half-assed their Iron Man costume. GO FORTH! #SDCC

@NBCHannibal: A request has been made to the Fannibals by the Comic-Con official to NOT eat people. #GoodLuck #Pannibal #Hannibal #SDCC

@TheGeekiary: This whole audience is a sea of flower crowns.

@cleolinda: Guys, someone take pictures of the audience, I want to see how antlered and flowered the room actually is. And tell 'em I said hi.

Ask and ye shall receive:

@NBCHannibal: #Hannibal #Pannibal for the #Fannibals! https://vine.co/v/hmwj0J9zqJL

@sepinwall: A few minutes from start of Hannibal panel at #SDCC. Will be live-blogging here http://bit.ly/17oYidQ Fuller! Dancy! Slade! @EWDocJensen!

ppyajunebug: Panel

@TheGeekiary: The stag was apparently almost a victim of budget cuts.

@DeLaurentiisCo: Show is tribute to Stanley Kubrick and David Lynch so their influences are present throughout.

@DeLaurentiisCo: The ear in the final episode is reference to Blue Velvet film. Was almost finger but an ear is easier to cough up.

Speaking of the ear, someone pointed out something in the recaps that made me want to curl up and die, in the best way possible.

@DeLaurentiisCo: The Hannibal smirk in last scene of S1 is reminiscent of someone finally capturing a squirrel in its cage.

@lessientinuviel: Tumblr is gonna be flooded with fanart of Will Graham as a squirrel after the #Pannibal.

ppyajunebug: Beer helps Hugh wind down from all the murder

@merythapy: Mads can shed a Single Perfect Tear on command #Pannibal #sdcc

@NBCHannibal: @BryanFuller says Mads didn't want to play "another #Hannibal" - he wanted to play Satan. #NailedIt #Pannibal #SDCC

Well, this makes Ian and Fio's cries of "THIS MAN! HE IS SATAN!" even more entertaining.

ppyajunebug: Bryan stumped by the possibility that wills encephalitis was caused by cannibalism

ppyajunebug: First two episodes are a two parter and reintroduces the characters

ppyajunebug: Will and Hannibal are never ever ever getting back together

@DeLaurentiisCo: Hint of eroticism between Will and Hannibal believed by Hugh to be profound connection between extreme unusual people.

ppyajunebug: Hugh doesn’t seem them as an item, but won’t take it away from shippers. There is some form of love between them.

@DeLaurentiisCo: @BryanFuller says love between two people need not be sexual and that's how he views #hannigram.

Heh. Good luck getting Tumblr to see it that way.

ppyajunebug: Hugh doesn’t think their connection is sexual. Bryan: "oh yeah?"

ETA: "Thanks, Bryan." Heh.

@HeAteUsUpdates: Moderator just asked how much of Bryan Fuller is in Will Graham. With that exact wording. #Pannibal

(hands up, walking away)

@TheGeekiary: Dancy to Fuller: Do you have an app that just generates random bizarre murder situations?

@DeLaurentiisCo: @nbc asked us to back off on angel wings episode because butt cracks were shown. Solution: fill cracks with blood.

You know, I joked about this being what must have happened. I joked.

ppyajunebug: Currently breaking episode four. Episode three is a trial. Will is coming out as a scrappy fighter

@NBCHannibal: "Episode 3 is a trial." - @BryanFuller #Hannibal #Pannibal #SDCC *cries in the corner*

@NBCHannibal: @BryanFuller Mischa was absolutely part of the DNA in the relationship between #Hannibal and Abigail.

@NBCHannibal: aaaaaand @BryanFuller just said "Swiggity Swag the Nightmare Stag" over the mic. WELL DONE, TUMBLR!

I do want to be clear, since there was some confusion--"swiggity swag" was not something I came up with, and that line in the finale recap was a reference to the widespreadness (I can word) of the meme on Tumblr; the earliest version of it I saw was this.

@DeLaurentiisCo: @Tattle_Crime gets a shout out from the audience!

@‏cleolinda: That was the best shriek from @Tattle_Crime in my ear right then, btw.

ppyajunebug: How will ate the ear will be in episode one!!!!!

@redheadedgirl: I'm considering the answer to the ear question to be a personal shout-out to @cleolinda's mom.

Ah, but she is just one of many questing for answers. Also, she tried to read the finale recap and couldn't get past that part.

Side note: Wait. I didn't actually tell y'all about the Pallas Cat Challenge, did I?

"Damn it, now I want a Will-is-a-Pallas-Cat comparison post (like Cumberbatch and that otter). Get on it, Tumblr."

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED, I said, because do you know anyone who has a bigger collection of Pallas cat pictures? No, you don't.

There are more, but the best ones are spoilers for the end of season one.

@queenofthedorks: @cleolinda Every time Hugh Dancy makes a face now I wonder if I can't match it with a Pallas cat. http://tmblr.co/ZCDPKyp-sT_o #thanks #ithink

"Turns out you can. Thanks Cleolinda."

Alan Sepinwall's liveblog can be found here as well ("Dancy complains that Mads is a sloppy dresser in real life, and tells him, 'These suits are wasted on you!'"). ETA: We also have a report from @jessimuhka, who saw the cracktacular NBC Dracula posters in person, God help us all.

@NBCHannibal: A fan just gave @BryanFuller her flower crown. He is wearing it. *the fannibals rejoice* #Hannibal #SDCC #Pannibal

@GaumontTV: RT @blakex: Bryan Fuller and his flower crown. #Hannibal #SDCC pic.twitter.com/mhu5TKedph

(Aaaaand there's antlers at the bottom.)

@DeLaurentiisCo: #Pannibal flower crowns are awesome!

You know, I don't really have a fanthropological answer for what's going on with the flower crowns--I swear I saw a tweet way back that said something like, "Look! I just photoshopped a flower crown onto Will!" So I feel like I can point to the "first" one... maybe. Basically, it caught on as the fandom's way of balancing the darkness and tragedy and gore by being silly and light-hearted and imagining Will Graham Having Nice Days. Which is a lot easier for me to roll with than "omg we are so grimdark edgy," at least, so I approve this message.

@DireRavenstag: Look at that happy minion. "Hugh and @BryanFuller posing with amazing Stag Cosplay. #Pannibal #SDCC pic.twitter.com/AORi4q47dl"

@DireRavenstag: I'm going to assume they aren't going to ask me to do a commentary track for the DVD. They can't handle my opinions on cinematography anyway.

@NBCHannibal: Confirmation - #Hannibal DVD coming out September 24! WITH GAG REEL

And here is a taste (I'm sorry) of it!

@Drag0nista: I'm scared to watch, it might shatter the illusion

@cleolinda: It's very short, and reassures me that everyone is okay and not hellishly traumatized.

‏@winston_graham: @Tattle_Crime *whispers* shut up bitch *cackles and runs off into the sunset*

@Tattle_Crime: @winston_graham RUDE!

In conclusion, they will release a video of the entire panel for you to watch, although this fan-filmed version is already up, and Freddie has gotten the go-ahead for an interview with Demore Barnes (Tobias) (and has at least two more already on the way that I know of). And later this morning, there is also a meetup:

@ppyajunebug: Calling today's #fannibal #Pannibal "Pannibal 2: Cannibal Boogaloo"

Go forth and be floral, bbs.

Know what looks even more like human ears? Thin slices of apple, sauteed, especially with raspberry sauce. My husband did a variation on this meal a few weeks ago and the apple thing was unsettling in a sort of hilarious way.

I followed Sepinwall's blog of the panel (couldn't keep up with Twitter) and I'm eagerly awaiting the official video because it seems like it was a joy all 'round. There's something weirdly...reassuring about how lovely they all seem and how much they enjoy what they're doing and the recognition that this fandom doesn't have to be all about grimness. One of the things I like about the show, and about how a lot of the fandom has turned, is the acknowledgment that the artfulness of the violence and the grimdarkness doesn't necessarily mean we are celebrating or recommending it, but that it also okay to appreciate this creation for what it is when we have a sense of perspective on it.

The gag reel is pure delightfulness. And it's fascinating to see the circumstances in which Hugh Dancy does and doesn't switch out of Will's voice and accent into his own.

Edited at 2013-07-19 03:36 pm (UTC)

Hee, yeah. I basically live for gag reels and behind-the-scenes stuff, so I really enjoy that kind of thing. Looking behind the curtain, as it were, actually highlights the hard work and talent involved, for me--to see how different it is to be on set with all the fake props and the flubs and laughing between the really great takes that actually get used. It's more impressive to me that you can watch that scene where Hugh Dancy looks like actual death warmed over, and then see him break out of it and then go right back into it. Also, I find it reassuring that he was not, in fact, like death warmed over. Like, intellectually we know it's just acting and makeup, but this show put us so thoroughly through the wringer that it's nice to see that it really was just pretend.

One of the things I like about the show, and about how a lot of the fandom has turned, is the acknowledgment that the artfulness of the violence and the grimdarkness doesn't necessarily mean we are celebrating or recommending it

I am personally super relieved that this turned out to be the case, yeah. It's one of the reasons I was all "HAY GUYS, NEVER FORGET, ABSOLUTE WORST" right out of the gate on the first recap, because I wanted a fun, affectionate, analytical atmosphere, not the swooning creepiness I had seen in, uh, earlier incarnations of the fandom. I mean, I'm sure that's still out there, but I wanted this corner of it to be fun, and I like that the fandom-wide memes are very light and affectionate.

I love that the flower crowns represented in the audience. Did this show really not get an Emmy nomination?

Not a single one. I knew the odds were pretty long on the acting front, but I was really, really hoping they'd get some tech nods. Fucking Hemlock Grove got two nominations.

(Deleted comment)
Oh! I did come up with the Dire Ravenstag name, yes. That's not the first time someone's credited "swiggity swag" to me, though, so I wanted to take the opportunity to make that clear.

I've come to love the flower crowns--they seem to represent how happy the show itself makes the fans, as opposed to the actual EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE tone of the show. What did I have at the beginning of the finale recap, something like *table flip* and then *hugs show forever*? That's what the flower crowns are, the way you feel about the show itself as opposed to the way the show makes you feel when it's putting you through the wringer.

(Deleted comment)
I also kinda felt like the flower crowns popped up out of nowhere, but they've really come to represent why I love this fandom. I mean, half the reason I decided to give the show a try was seeing how much goofy fun the fandom was having with it. It's nice to get into how intense each episode is, delve into meta discussion, and then decompress with all of the silliness.

The gag reel. THE GAG REEL. XD

Hee, yeah--I kept seeing people reblog things on Tumblr and saying, "I don't even watch this show, but the fandom cracks me up." There's just something really sweet and affectionate about the flower crowns, I don't know.

Seriously, this show and the fandom for it encompass everything that is and can be absolutely amazing about TV today. So thank you for your recapping and linkspams because 1) they rock and are so well-thought-out and informative and 2) you're helping make the fandom as fabulous as it is!

Aw, thank you! I'm just lucky the fandom turned out to be so much fun. :)

I... happen to agree that "love between two people need not be sexual" - I actually wrote a long incoherent post about it just last week. Still think actual sexual relationship between them pre-finale would be... what's the mirror-universe version of "nice"? Not an anthonym, just... an evil version? But, well, that's what fanfiction and fanart are for.

Actually, the only people I've seen on tumblr going "no sex=Not Canon" are anti-shippers.

(Also, there *are* asexual Hannigram shippers on tumblr. Pretty sure they're not heartbroken at all.)

Heh. Yeah, I've actually talked about it a little, too--I think the most I went into it was the time Freddie interviewed me, and I said something about complex but maybe detached ideas of attraction, and a sense of possibility/ambiguity being more interesting than a traditional idea of sexuality for this particular character, given the "fallen angel" thing they talk about. (I've always believed, for example, that Sherlock Holmes isn't a particularly sexual character, and if anything, I'd say he's "logicsexual," if that makes sense, and Watson is his life partner in logic.) So to me, what's really interesting is that there's clearly something there between Will and Hannibal, but it's exactly what we're seeing: something ambiguous and undefined and not even entirely understood. Because that goes with Bryan Fuller's interviews about Hannibal being sort of surprised and curious about his own feelings, and it being a "personal journey of discovery" or whatever. Honestly, I watched Silence of the Lambs again earlier this week for the first time in years, and on the commentary, the way Jonathan Demme talks about Hannibal and Clarice is very similar, about it being very verbal and mental. Setting aside later developments in the series, I can completely see both relationships having that dynamic.

(I don't think anyone's actually upset about it, I was being facetious.)

I'm so glad you explained about the flower crowns, because I was like... I feel like I should know this, but on the other hand, it feels like it's out of nowhere. I was pretty sure it had come from Hannibal fandom. But it seems to be infecting other shows at SDCC -- the Teen Wolf stars appear to have gotten flower-crowned.

I think that's actually a good thing. I would love to see it just spreading all over SDCC, into every show and movie.

I've actually gotten a definitive answer now: it started with... One Direction?

I usually don't feel a desire to go to fan conventions but this one looks like so much fun, I'm actually feeling pangs of regret.... It seems like a good time was had by all. I'm looking forward to the video coming out ('fraid I couldn't make out the audio on the fan one). What I've heard seems intruguing! I'm looking forward to scrappy squirrel Will in Season two. And the gag reel was amazing. This fandom, and your recaps in particular make me laugh so much, it's awesome.

I feel, like, 25% regret I didn't witness all of this in person, and 75% relief that I'm in a quiet air-conditioned house. Clearly, I am not cut out for this sort of thing.

Hee. I was honestly surprised it was that hard to do, I guess because he made it look so easy on the show itself.

I saw the fan filmed version and it's pretty decent, if you don't mind not understanding a word David Slade mumbles NOT to the microphone.

About your aversion to mushrooms: I never liked mushrooms because of the taste, not its shape, but I can't eat dates because they look like a dried cockroach.

One of my favorite things about the pannibal was seeing Bryan Fuller talk like an excited kid and seeing Hugh smile. But now I've got Will-as-a-squirrel rather than Will-as-a-puppy stuck in my head and now you went and threw in Will-as-a-Pallas cat (which I've never even heard of before) and my Will animal metaphors are all confused.

Will and Hannibal are never ever ever getting back together

Thank God. Seriously people- why would anyone want anyone, let alone Will to get together with Hannibal? Except Alana during S2, for storyline reasons. I really hope fans don't ask Hugh or Mads about it anymore (they can ask Bryan Fuller- he lives for this shit, the troll). Hannibal was the worst towards Will, there's no going back, just getting even.

Side note- am I the only one who cringes whenever people call Mads "Mads", now that I know it's pronounced "Mass"? I'm so used to people distorting my name (both of them) that I'm a bit sensitive to the subject.

YES, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!!! But Freddie can help, cause their scenes would be delicious. And Beverly can get on board as well, cause she's a badass and maybe also Alana... But basically all I want is for Will to fight back and show us all the mongoose that can go toe to toe with the snake (if a snake had toes...).

I wish the DVD would come out a few days earlier, but no matter what, I'll have it by November- I need that gag reel and all the other lovely extras. I cackled at "shut up bitch" and Laurence over yelling "I KNOW. WHEN I'M. AWAKE!!!" I also love Hugh not always breaking accent and just being adorable and not miserable, cause he's not Will Graham.

>>>Seriously people- why would anyone want anyone, let alone Will to get together with Hannibal?

Why *wouldn't* people want to?

"Because he's evil" is not an argument - villains get shipped with other characters all the time. Frequently with heroes.

He's an interesting character, not some one-dimensional moustache-twirling cardboard cutout, of course people would want to see him interacting with other people beyond killing and eating them. Want to see what it would entail. And his main relationship in this season were with Will - of course there would be slash. (There was slash when Will had yellow hair and Lecter looked like Anthony Hopkins with a ponytail, It didn't start with thenew incarnation). They are both interesting characters who have interesting dynamic - why wouldn't people ship them?

(I know I'm overusing the word "interesting". I'm sorry.)

Some want it for shallow reasons, some want it, believe or not, "for storyline reasons". Why him getting together with Alana "for storyline reasons" isn't a problem, but seducing Will would be? (What about Lecter/Bedelia?) But wanting it for shallow reasons isn't wrong either. Because it's fiction and being intrigued by fictional monsters =/= drooling over real life monsters. (Being interested in real life monsters also =/= drooling over them.) And shipping heroes with villains isn't morally wrong. And people can have kinks and want to explore them in fiction.

So, okay, you know how when you slice an onion (esp. a red onion) and you're not really that awesome at it, and you end up with this slightly smooshed onion end (because you also have kind of a shitty knife) that's a bit oval and has ragged onion layers? That is the first thing I thought of when I saw the ear in the sink. I could tell from Will's reaction that I was wrong, but I couldn't shake it to parse what I was actually seeing.

Just, you know, something else food-related that severed ears can forever ruin.

Thanks for this, Cleo. I'm never going to sit through an actual video of the panel, so the succinct Twitterized alternative was ideal.

Hee, most welcome. I'm doing a summary of the fan meetup as well, because it turned out to be hilarious, it looks like.

Heh. Good luck getting Tumblr to see it that way.

Well, let's be honest here, Tumblr would happily ship a wall and a floor. Add a ceiling, and you'd have a Tumblr shipping war. Add a door in that wall, and you've got a kink meme (with gif sets).

Wish I was there. This is sounding like a lot of fun for all.

I'm just sitting here with my head in my hands laughing because it's completely true. God bless us, every one.

The stag was apparently almost a victim of budget cuts.

That would have been a tragedy. A TRAGEDY.

How can you not afford the mascot of your show? How was the finale even going to work, then, if there was no stag imagery?!

Wow. I'm really amazed by the room pretty much full of flower crowns. That's fantastic, and this kind of united feel!

It just warms my heart that the show people seem to enjoy it as well, as opposed to giving everyone this uneasy side-eye. I'm writing up the morning meetup as well--this completely warms my heart:
