For Snarkfesters

Hey, guys. If you ever lurk or post on the Snarkfest board, you may have noticed that it's down. Long story short, someone who either had or gained admin access started deleting everything. "Gained access" could mean outsider hacking, but we don't know. All we know is what we've deduced from looking at the mod panel (from which we were eventually shut out) and the board itself--which is why there are a lot of questions we can't answer, because all we have is conjecture. We're trying to find a solution, which may or may not involve setting up a new board. But there will be a board of some kind; Snarkfest as a human community isn't going anywhere.

I'm posting this here, though, because everyone's kind of far-flung and I'm not sure everyone's hearing the news. We're posting updates at snarkfest_lj; the most recent official update on the board (and Genevieve's baby!) was here. Please join the comm if you have an LJ ID or bookmark it if you don't. If you know of anyone else from the board, make sure they know about the comm and the situation in general.

ETA: We started setting up a new board last night. It'll be ready soon. That's all I can say for now. There's some drama going on, but we were already prepared for that.

Also, my head hurts, and I probably screwed up the HTML

Wow, today has been a stressful, busy day. Snarkfest is back up at a new location, as previously mentioned. Also, I had a surprise dentist appointment ("What do you MEAN, it's not tomorrow?!"), which was deathly unfun (I hate the grindy tooth-polisher thing). Fortunately, I got a good report, so I can probably stop dreaming about my teeth falling out now.

What Happened Was...

So. A couple of days ago, most of Snarkfest vanished into the ether. Did y’all ever read the Charlotte Lennox entries on Bad Penny? That’s the feel I’m hoping for here. I want to be as neutral as possible, but there will probably be some fallout and some anger from this. It’s just that I feel that 2000+ posters who just had their online home yanked out from under them deserve to know what happened, and I was in a position to see a lot of it go down, albeit in most cases after the fact.

The rule of fair play as we do it on JournalFen, however, is that anything locked on a LiveJournal is off-limits. If I accidentally repost locked material without realizing it, or without permission from the journal owner, I’ll remove it ASAP. The exception to this is anything that was ever posted publicly. If it was ever released to the public, it’s considered fair game whether it’s locked now or not.

I’m a little hazy on the whens and whats, since the old threads are no longer available to view, so if you have dates or other information, I’ll revise this as we go. My personal intention is to keep this under a filter while other posters contribute new or more accurate information, and once I feel like it's as fair and complete as possible, I'll unlock it for the public. I also feel like it will be better to have let it sit a few days, rather than appear on the top of everyone's friends lists, given that there would be many, many people unconnected with SF who would then see it. I don't mind or care who reads this, and I hope any SFer who wants to know what happened will see it, but my intention isn't to present it as entertainment for all and sundry, as it were. ETA: As of late Thursday night, it's now public.

Also, since I originally posted this on Wednesday night, Nov. 29, I have gotten a longer and more accurate version of RWS's original Michael Richards post from a comment Preciosa left on someone else's journal, and a full repost of the comments deleted from the MR thread. So far as I myself remember, all of these are correct.

The exchange on bluekermit's journal

A poster emailed me to request that the Gogo - RWS - bluekermit exchange be posted in full, since she didn't think it was fair to RWS to only post part of it. As such, I've posted the full exchange as a separate entry, backdated to the same day as the original writeup to keep them together.

The entry is currently locked to where even I can't see it (remember, bluekermit specifically made it public at one point so people could see it), so I can't give you a link. I do have it Scrapbooked, if anyone just desperately needs screencaps.
