1) snowcoma says her mother made it through surgery all right (which is a relief), but that she will (as expected) be in recovery for several weeks, so keep the good thoughts coming.

2) As a side note/follow-up to the "I can't drive and thus I am ashamed" entry: two things here. One is that Birmingham is a driving town. We don't have much public transport to speak of, and I specifically live in a very secluded, woodsy, sprawling suburb. There's nowhere to walk to. So I don't feel bad that I keep freaking out while trying to drive per se; I feel bad that I have to keep begging for rides. If I lived in Chicago or New York or wherever, I wouldn't care. Two: I hadn't really thought about it, but I don't look at other problems I have in the same (negative, defeated) way. I talk about mental health issues in a very calm, forthright, accepting way usually--and I think the reason I didn't do that this time is because I can't quite bring myself to say that my fear of driving is a legitimate part of the depression and the bipolar-ness and the other issues that I am very open about--because they're health issues to be treated. Maybe because no one's ever made me feel bad about those (I am amazingly fortunate in that regard), and I feel really bad about not being able to drive. I've always felt and/or been made to feel that my fear of driving is just me being a baby or refusing to grow up or be independent or something. I don't know. "How old are you?" And so on. When, in actuality, I tend to panic at speeds any higher than 20 mph, and I'm terrified that, if I lose control of the car due to this panic, I'm going to kill someone. I mean, since I can't explain how this fear is somehow not part of those mental problems or how it's not legitimate, I guess it is. But that's why I took a tone I usually don't, I guess, because I can't bring myself to defend it and acknowledge it the way I do other things. And several people pointed this out. And it occurred to me that--if people say they feel so much better when I talk openly about my depression--does that mean I've just made people who are afraid to drive feel worse by calling myself a neurotic loser? Uh. Didn't think about that. So. Apologies there. I'll try to do better next time.

ETA: For someone who "can't" drive, I have actually driven a lot. And it never gets any better.

3) I specifically held this entry until the new Deathly Hallows trailer went up, so: huzzah! Also: New Deathly Hallows pics. This picture delights me because you can tell EXACTLY who is who, and almost entirely thanks to Daniel Radcliffe's body language and face(s). I say "almost" because the miniskirt helps.

4) Given the privacy issues we've talked about: you're going to want to read this. @griner: Wow, that subtle Facebook "not now" button change has a pretty big side effect.

*EPICFLAILS* THIS TRAILER IS THE MOST AWESOMETRAILER I HAVE SEEN SINCE EVER AND THIS MOVIE IS GOING TO BE GREAT I AM SO EXCITED YOU HAVE NO IDEA.

ALSO? ALSO? "You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide."

THAT'S RIGHT, SCRIPTWRITERS! TEACH KIDS THAT THAT LINE IS BULLSHIT BECAUSE IT IS.

Imma go watch it again.

I've watched it three times and every time I see Dobby I CRY.

DOOOOOOOBBBBBBBYYYYYYY!!!!

::grabs pillow to cry in::

Also, Cleo, your Facebook link (probably because of the @griner) wants me to send an email. You'll want to fix the link.

does that mean I've just made people who are afraid to drive feel worse by calling myself a neurotic loser? Uh. Didn't think about that. So. Apologies there. I'll try to do better next time.

I don't think so because the rest of us have all put up with that particular load of social bullshit too, so it's mostly validating. ("I'm not the only one who feels like that" as opposed to "now I feel like a neurotic loser.")

The @griner FB link is broken. Just FYI.

My apologies: There really didn't appear to be any other comments when I typed this. Too many tabs open, I guess.

I stopped reading after GoF and what is this

'Newsies' Getting Its Own Broadway Musical EEEEEEEEEE \o/ \o/ \o/

And the picture at that link, UNEXPECTED YAY

"Alan Mencken ('Beauty and the Beast,' 'Aladdin') has confirmed that he's collaborating with Harvey Fierstein ('Torch Song Trilogy,' 'La Cage aud Folles') to update the musical for the Broadway stage.

- U-update? :C What? Why? The only change I can see myself tolerating, off the top of my head, would be making Sarah less pointless. Anyway, Newsies love time in this post go!!

I remember reading somewhere (possibly back when I hung out on the Newsies IMDB boards) that Sarah got a song in one of the original drafts. Maybe they'll add that? Also, I could do without the "weasel" jokes.

that DH pic:

Yes, but which one's Fred and which is George?

George is the first on the left, Fred is the second. I can tell just by the EXPRESSION.

Aaaaaand that is why I love Maureen Johnson.

Natalie Portman Attached to ‘Edgy’ Remake of Snow White.

. . . as opposed to the original, which was entirely wholesome and child-friendly.

Hee, I know, right?

Beastly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1152398/), the modern take on Beauty and the Beast. It's also a SLAP in the FACE.

These movies are beautiful and are in no need of modern day makeovers.

've always felt and/or been made to feel that my fear of driving is just me being a baby or refusing to grow up or be independent or something. I don't know. "How old are you?" And so on. One of my not-driving friends says she tried learning to drive, and decided that everyone would be safer if she didn't. Since she lives and works in downtown Seattle, that works out OK for her, but in most of the US - hell, in the Seattle area that *isn't* downtown - if you don't drive you can't get to a supermarket or a pharmacy or a doctor's office, etc. We are so car-dependent here...

I'M SO HAPPY THIS IS A REAL THING THAT I CANNOT EVEN STAND IT. I mean, they're playing non-Lost characters but WHO CARES.

I really hope that before they sell their souls to NBC sign a contract that they both get a chance to pop up on Fringe. I really want semi-evil-government-official Terry O'Quinn back in my life.

Wait, which part is this about?

(Deleted comment)
I am forty-three years old (today!) and have never had a driver's license, though I have had permits. I currently hold a state ID card. I took the driver's test exactly once, and failed it by a very narrow margin, but I was so jittery that I never have brought myself to take it again. That was more than fifteen years ago.

I'm lucky in that our bus system is amazingly good for a West Coast town, and also that I have a devoted husband with loads of free time who is willing and available to drive me everywhere (I do mean EVERYWHERE). I also worry that this is not the healthiest thing for either me or my relationship, to be that dependent on someone else for transportation. It's worked for over twenty years, but probably won't forever.

My father died when he jaywalked and got hit by a car. That was when I was ten. To this day, I am terrified by the possibility of hitting someone.

Okay, who is who in that pic? I guess it's Hermione in the miniskirt and the worried expression, but ... who else?

fleur is the one in the mini skirt.

Hermione is supposed to be the one on the farthest right.

DH Trailer - can'twaitcan'twaitcan'twait!!! *flails*

"Gnomeo and Juliet" as based on Shakespeare??? Only as much as "Eclipse" was based on Shakespeare... (May the Ghost of Hamlet's father have mercy on your souls).
