SAG Awards liveblog #1

First of all: ladies and gentlemen, Henry Cavill is your new Superman.

Secondly: I am Cleo, and I am, perhaps regrettably, not an actor. But all of these fine people are. I am told that Jack McBrayer is the one who was a temp, a waiter, and a dog walker, and greatly looks forward to being a guest at car and boat shows and a convicted shoplifter in the future. Julianna Margulies flubs her lines. Rico Rodriguez gets a huge round of applause for being a festive little beach ball of self-possession. Melissa Leo gets a huge round of applause for being Melissa Leo, and possibly because everyone is already drunk, which is my favorite kind of awards show. Julia Stiles was in a play or something once that might have been about aliens. They are, in fact, all actors.

Please welcome! Alec Baldwin and Betty White, who is glad they are both working "at their age." Forthwith, an incredibly informative nominee list!

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series
JON HAMM / Don Draper – “MAD MEN” (AMC)
HUGH LAURIE / Dr. Gregory House – “HOUSE” (FOX)

Steve Buscemi wins, which suggests that maybe HBO didn't have to buy him the Golden Globe. I still have a hard time that a sober, objective voting body awarded one to Anna Paquin for playing Sookie Stackhouse, however. POINT BEING, Steve Buscemi did not expect this to be the first award (he explains) and so his speech is all over the place, although he does congratulate Scorsese for winning the DGA yesterday. Has a SAG winner ever been played off the stage? Because it occurs to me now that this is the one awards show where it would never happen.

Please welcome! Mark Ruffalo and Annette Bening in jewelly gold-beige to give a drinky explanation of The Kids Are All Right, or, as my mother refers to it, Did Something Happen to the Children? I like nice long clips, because they give me time to type.

Please welcome! Eva Longoria and Cory Monteith! That... that right there is a height differential. Eva is wearing white, so at least she won't have to face off against Bening in the parking lot afterwards.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series
GLENN CLOSE / Patty Hewes – “DAMAGES” (FX)
KYRA SEDGWICK / Dep. Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson – “THE CLOSER” (TNT)

Julianna Margulies takes it two years in a row (what? I read over last year's liveblogs. We at Cleolinda Industries believe in quality control) to huge cheers and her dress is red and strapless and fabulous. Unless there is some frippery in the back I am mercifully unaware of, this is A+ gownery. Also, she thanks the people who have been digging New York out of the snow, and her in-laws for producing "a spectacular human being." Aw, honey, now something terrible's gonna happen! You can't say shit like that and not get divorced or find Nazi surfboards in the garage! Sigh. Commercials.

digging NY out of the snow?

Also a lurker for god knows how long, first time commenter :)

Digging NY out of the snow? To the best of my knowledge, no one HAS been digging NY out of the snow. But then again, I'm away at college in PA right now, so my knowledge of the snow dumpage in NY comes second hand from my mother. But I know here they pretty much gave up trying to dig out of the snow after the sixth or seventh snowpocalypse. Which has been lovely for someone like me with mobility problems.

*totally off topic* but this purple on purple comment color scheme is REALLY inaccessible to some visually impaired people. you might wanna fix that.

Re: digging NY out of the snow?

I'm replying on my phone right now. When I get back to my desk, I'll figure out how to change the layout. Just glancing over it briefly, I'm not sure "comment background" is a separate field, so it may involve some experimenting with the entire journal layout.
